And the winner is...

During the month of February and some of March, the library sponsored a contest that focused on the Mango database. Mango is the on-line language database that is available free-of-charge through the Library. Languages available: Spanish (Latin American), French, Italian, German, Russian, Portuguese (Brazil), Chinese (Mandarin), Irish, Japanese, Korean, Latin, and ESL for Arabic Speakers. To be eligible to participate you needed to sign up and do at least one lesson. The folks that did the most lessons were winners twice. Anderson and Easley had additional ways that you could win. This contest was open to all at TCTC - student and staff. Winners for the first part of the contest that picked up their prize: Wanda White, Amber D. Floyd, Lynn Shook, Heather Redd, and Violet Price. (FYI, we had a number of folks that were notified but never picked up their prize!) Grand prize winners were Heather Redd and Lynn Shook. Thanks so much for "playing" and learning a bit of a new language.

Compliments on the Library Web pages

The library has a comment area available on its webpages.  Today, we got not one but TWO compliments.

On the majority of our pages we have an IM widget. This allows someone to reach out and chat with us to ask reference questions.  It is a handy tool. Today it was evidently handier than normal.

The first comment we received was "This is truely convinient! I luv it! Thank u TCTC!"

On the same page (fyi, the Countries and Culture page at http://library.tctc.edu/countries) another student commented "I love the library at tctc it is so great and i learn so much sometimes i get on this site even ehen i dont know what i am looking for while im chilling with my gf she thinks it is awesome tooo yess!!!! this site is great thank you tctc librarians".

It is always great to hear when we have impacted your research in a positive way.  Thanks!

TCTC Library Gets Connected

TCTC Library participated in the college sponsored Get Connected event. Each campus library location informed students of our Book Discussion Group and our new Foreign Language Database. Mango Language database has various languages that students may learn more about via the online resource. Also, the library discussion group is featuring two titles for the Spring 2013 semester. We plan to discuss each title and upon completion, watch the movie that was released as a result of the success of the book. The chosen titles are The Help and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

TCTC Library Display

This month's Library display contains a plethora of titles that were deemed by both library staff and faculty as TCTC Library Treasure. During the holiday season, we inventoried the library and found lots of great titles that we thought should be displayed for potential patrons. From history to Batman to literary favorites and casual reading, we have lots of subjects to choose from within the display. Some of the featured titles are: The Help, Founding Brothers, Our Kind of People, Hunger Games, Alice's Tea Cup, Ayurveda, Zumba: an Instructional Guide for Beginners & A Century of Innovation. Stop by the library today and peruse our collection...We'd love to see you!

Celebrating the Civil Rights Movement

The library has been celebrating the 50th anniversary of TCTC every month with books, brochures, and a special webpage that is dedicated to the celebration.  On this webpage which is located at http://library.tctc.edu/50th we have a tab dedicated to Book Displays.  This tab has listings of books and streaming videos.  It also has a listing of the previous brochures.

Pieces of information that you will find on these pages include for November: In 1962 James Meredith was the first African American accepted into the University of Mississippi meaning that the all-white school would be integrated. Mr. Meredith and other protestors; such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), fought against the state for his right to be educated at the university of his Choice. Eventually the president at the time, John F. Kennedy, had to step in and send the U.S. Army troops to control rioting on the campus. The following year in 1963 James Meredith was able to attend the university.
